Bury PS SIG Exhibition of Sports Images

BURY PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY SPORTS SIG (SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP)

Exhibition of Sports Images from Feb 26th to May 20th 2022

Wex Photo and Video, Downing St. Industrial Estate, Carlton Place, Manchester M12 6HH

This exhibition is a sample of five years’ work shot by a small number of members of Bury Photographic Society who specialise in sports photography.

Since the group was formed, we have shot dramatic images at venues ranging from local parks to international sports halls.

Our 40 framed prints and 30 large screen digital images cover 40 different sports from international basketball to mounted archery and from championship taekwondo to roller derby.

Obviously, we have to limit our numbers at some events, but sports such as motocross or jet ski are usually open. Other sports such as carriage driving and water polo have only specialist media coverage and have been most welcoming.

We have received a very encouraging comment from Andy Hooper, chief sports photographer of the Daily Mail and six times British Professional Sports Photographer of the year. He is the author of the book which inspired us, “Capture the Moment”, a practical guide to sports photography for the 2012 London Olympics and beyond.

On seeing the images we sent him, he replied, “Wow, what lovely variety. It’s nice to see images of sport which are not all Premier League football. You really get a sense of drama when you look at the variety. Please make the most of your freedom. Keep up the great work and please send me more!”

Bury Photographic Society meets every Thursday at the Fishpool Liberal Club in Bury and welcomes new members whether beginners or experienced photographers.

We thank Wex Photographic and Video for allowing us to stage this exhibition and for their help and encouragement. We also note they are to make the exhibition space available to photographic groups in the future as part of the company’s pledge to make closer contacts with the photographic communities in the area.
