Latest News
In June we held a display in Bolton Parish Church during a mini festival period and in September we are having an exhibition in Bolton Museum joint with Bolton Art Circle We're pleased to regain some space in the museum as we haven't been allowed in for a few years! The club still enjoys regular day trips out and in July we are having our annual weekend away which this year is to Conway. We are always trying to embrace digital photography and have recently had a few tuition sessions which were well received by some of the group and we hope to do more of these in the near future.

Lytham St Annes PS
60th Anniversary
Lytham St. Annes and District P.S. was founded 0n 1 st April 1948 with a meeting that attracted about twenty people. The objects were the promotion of the Science and Fine Art of Photography by the holding of demonstrations of photographic processes.
There were fortnightly meetings at an annual subscription of one guinea 21 shillings) with 50% off for juniors and 50% added for married couples. What was twenty-one shillings is now a subscription of twenty-one pounds – for weekly meetings!
By 1951/2 the ‘and District’ had been dropped, the Borough’s Mayor became Patron and the Society had joined the L&CPU
A membership of 45 n that year jumped to 78 – today it stands at 127.
President’ report for 1956 touched on making the Society more sociable but it was not always a good thing. The romance which had matured between two of the most active members had resulted in their complete ever since.
Interesting figures for attendance at annual exhibitions are: in 1952 – 1,300; in 1955 2,200; in 1959 2,100, in 1974 – 2,400; in 1980 – 2,763: in 2007 – 1,063.
In 1957/8 an inter-club battle gave rise to the Joint Fylde Photographic Societies.
It was not until 1964/5 that the Society elected its first lady President and, from then on, more lady members were recruited. In its sixty years there have been only three Honorary Treasurers.
Among other things the Society ran an Inter-schools competition for several years, sponsored in turn by Fishwicks, Lancashire Life and Abbey Photographic, Blackpool) and a NW Young Photographer of the Year competition under the auspices of Bae.
In the latter case, the entries formed a touring exhibition displayed week by week in libraries throughout Lancashire
The Society has been very fortunate to have among its membership some of the most knowledgeable and accomplished photographers in the Union. This and an ttractive annual exhibition have undoubtedly contributed to the large number of members.
The anniversary dinner attracted 97 members and guests including, as you will see, L&CPU President and Mrs. Thompson plus Treasurer, Gordon Jenkins (behind rather than before the camera) and Mrs. Jenkins. Every lady received a boxed orchid while the men made do with a chocolate egg! Other pictures by Lytham member, Peter Parnell.
A small anniversary exhibition spanning the sixty years, to be opened by L&CPU Vice-president and Secretary Chrisine Widdall, will be on display at the Lytham Heritage Centre 10 th – 29 th June. Tuesdays – Sundays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Crewe Photographic Society
Recently Crewe Photographic Society held its annual awards evening and for the first time our Chairman, John Royle instigated a couple of special new “Chairman’s Awards”:
The Outstanding Service Medal has been created to honour the remarkable work of the largely unsung heroes of Crewe Photographic Society. The first recipients are our long standing (and suffering) Club Secretary Tom Seaton and his wife MarySeaton our Competition Secretary. John felt it was high time that we said how much we appreciate what they do for the society. There are others too, who we will pay tribute to in time but nobody can fail to agree that a tribute is long, long overdue to Tom & Mary. They are great ambassadors for the Club when we make visits elsewhere. We salute them.

Tom & Mary Seaton
Chairman’s Choice was a new prize that was instigated to celebrate members’ work on a broader basis. It is intended to be used as an opportunity to comment on the successes of our members in our competitions and highlight the work of some people in particular. “Dancing Through Time”, by Carol Cotter, was John’s choice as the first Image of the Year. ( Look out for Carol's Image as 'Image of the Week')

Who are the Champions?

Peter Gennard from Smethwick PS presenting Ed Roper from Wigan 10 with the trophy for the competition “Who are the Champions”.
The competition was supported by eight clubs from the L&CPU.
Warrington PS
1. Warrington PS now have a touring lecture of our historic lantern slide collection (652 images) dating back to the 1890s. This collection has been digitally scanned for easier projection due to a lottery award. The images and lecture are very interesting and provide a different evening for clubs for their programmes. It is in the LCPU handbook under Martin Berry LRPS. Some of the images are now starting to appear on Warrington PS's web site but this will take some time.
2. Warrington PS has updated its website with a new format and series of galleries. It is a great advert for clubs to use and every club should give it serious consideration. They are attracting alot of new members via their website. www.warringtonps.co.uk
3. Warrington PS had a portrait evening before Christmas with trained birds of prey provided by Raptor Vision. They are based outside of Wigan and are available to visit clubs or arrange outdoor workshops at very competitive prices. They provide 'natural' settings and the birds are fully trained and very well behaved. Warrington PS had a great evening and some images are available on their news page of our website. There is even an image of Martin Berry with a golden eagle on his arm. It is a different opportunity to normal lectures. Raptor vision are very professional and have been used by the BBC for the Nature in Britain filming.

Bury PS
I have just been informed that a member of BURY PS Barrie Kelly has a major article in Lancashire Life in the December issue 2007 about his life as a nature photographer and also as a former International sprinter who represented Great Britain in the Mexico Olympics in 1968. It covers 4 pages, and contains 11 photographs of his recent trip to Namibia. Well Done Barrie!
Crewe Photographic Society

Crewe Photographic Society held their 3rd Annual DPI Competition for the Jim Harrison Trophy last night (6th December 2007). The trophy was donated by our centenarian member Jim Harrison in 2005 but sadly Jim died in November 2006 a few months after his 100th birthday (the L&CPU struck a special medal for him). The competition now reminds us of a wonderful gentleman who was still an active photographer - and digital too!
The winning image last night was "Impala & New Born Calf" by Ken Dickenson, who is also a member of Mid-Cheshire CC. We also recognise the "Best Monochrome Image" and that went this year to John Royle CPAGB for "Dermot O'Reilly, Drayman". There were 102 entries from 26 members. The judge was Ian Stewart ARPS DPAGB.
Pictured: Ken Dickenson receives the Jim Harrison Trophy from Ian Stewart ARPS DPAGB.
Sandbach Photographic Society
“Further Down the Alley Way”by Nigel Richards was joint first for Sandbach in the battle between Sandbach and Nantwich.
The author of the other print joint winner who also won the slides was Andrew Charlesworth of Nantwich
Nantwich won the battle, it was close in the prints with Nantwich scoring 175 against Sandbach 174 but with the slides Nantwich pulled ahead with 180 against Sandbach 172 giving a final score of Nantwich 355 - Sandbach 346.
MAKEOVER STUDIO
A new Studio has been opened in Oldham by Mike and Norman, which is within easy access from the M60 and M62. It is available for hire to individuals or groups of photographers.
More Details
Attention for all those clubs that are planning their syllabus for the next season, a new lecture has been offered to the L&C by Phil and Gwen Charnock.
Phil and Gwen Charnock have returned to the lecture scene after a gap of over 6 years. They believe that people now want to know what makes a good picture & the imagination behind it. Drawing on over 25 years experience in amateur and professional photography the lecture is entitled Digitally Creative.
They are also conducting a series of 1 to 1 workshops at their studio, which will give for the first time an in depth analysis to their unique approach. The next Photo Workshops are TBA . Advisable to book early. Cost is £45 for the day, limited to max 6 photographers.
