Novice Cup Results

As L&CPU President James Hardy remarked in his welcome address at the start of the event yesterday, it was good to see people getting back together again after the more than a year and a half we’ve endured with the covid-19 outbreak.

The day started with a talk by Tony North from South Manchester CC – “My journey though the CPAGB and DPGAB Awards with support from the L&CPU mentoring scheme” The talk included Tony’s Distinction panel of macro and landscape images. Meanwhile, the judges in the backroom went through the mono print entry, and selected the winner and commends.

Following a refreshment break, we had a double act – Eddie Leach and Brianna Gilligan from Oldham PS. The talk was headed “Developing young talent”, and started with Brianna (aged 11 I believe) showing how she competed successfully beyond the Young Photographer Section, giving the adults a run for their money with her portrait work in the Annual Competition. Eddie then showed his Distinction panel, and gave us more of an insight into Brianna’s development as a photographer.

Lunch was a choice of hotpot or cheese and onion pie. It turned out the pie was more ‘cheesy peas’ than cheese and onion, something I didn’t think existed outside of ‘The Fast Show’!

Resuming after lunch, David Butler MFIAP MPSA ARPS BPE5 Hon LCPU of Chorley PS gave us an insight into attaining PAGB distinctions, and the L&CPU Mentoring Scheme. David has a wealth of experience in club and salon photography, and sits on the PAGB adjudicating panel as well as being a mentor in the L&CPU scheme. At the end of his presentation, there was a lively debate on why photographs got different scores in the CPAGB and DPAGB awards, sometimes getting a higher mark in the DPAGB than in the CPAGB. I don’t think there’ll ever be consistency until judges are cloned, or Adrian Lines finds a way to program them!

Novice Cup now renamed to The Bob Robinson Trophy

During David’s presentation, the colour prints were judged and awards selected. The 2021 Novice Cup, now renamed the Bob Robinson Trophy, was won by Bebington PB, with Heswall PS just one point behind. In the individual sections North Cheshire PS and Heswall PS tied for first place in the Open Colour, whilst Lytham St Annes and South Manchester CC tied for first place in the Mono section.

Thanks go to our guest speakers, and the judges: Tillman Kleinhans ARPS DPAGB EFIAPb BPE3; Colin Douglas ARPS DPAGB EFIAPb BPE4 and Julia Douglas. We were well looked-after by the staff of Elmbank Conference Centre. I’m sure the competition team headed by Wendy Monaghan were pleased with the success of the event, as were the attendees.
