The 2016 Annual Club Competitions were held over two days at Lowton Church of England High School
Newton Road, Lowton. The photographs were judged by Simon Allen MPAGB EFIAP, Anne Greiner MPAGB, Rod Wheelans, MPAGB, Hon PAGB, MFIAP, FRPS.

Day one – the PDI competition

On the first day, the PDI’s were shown, and Wigan 10 took an early lead in the open colour section, closely followed by Chorley and North Cheshire PS.

After a short break, the mono section was run, and this time, Chorley came first, Wigan 10 second, and Alsager third.

The competition sped on at a brisk pace, mainly due to the efficient software that L&CPU Secretary Adrian Lines had written for the purpose. After a long lunch break, judging resumed with the nature section, and again, Chorley came first. Second was Southport, while Birkenhead were third. Wigan 10 came fifth, consequently Chorley took the trophy for top PDI club. Wigan 10 coming ranked second, and Alsager third.

Day two – the Print Competition

Day two saw Wigan 10 and Chorley drawing in the open colour print section, followed by Atherton and North Cheshire in 3rd and 4th places. Following a break, the mono prints were judged, and Chorley came first, opening up a two point lead over Wigan 10, with North Cheshire coming third.

Following the lunch break, it was the turn of the nature prints. Would Chorley keep its slim lead, or would Wigan 10 surge ahead? When the nature results were shown on screen, there was a gasp of surprise from the audience: Warrington PS headed the table on 106 points! Wigan 10 came second on 105 points, and Chorley PS on 104.

Although Wigan had pulled back a point, they had needed three to top Chorley and win the Print Competition. Consequently, Chorley won the Overall club trophy, winning in both the PDI and Print competitions.

Chorley President Will Stead commented on the result: “We are delighted with the results from the weekend’s competition and Chorley’s members are once again on a high. Whilst winning a national competition is immensely satisfying, some of our toughest challenges have been at a regional level in the L&CPU. To win both print and PDI competitions means so much to the members of Chrorley PS and I am simply amazed by the skill and dedication from our members. It was also really good to see some of our neighbouring clubs do so well, particularly Leyland PS and the newly formed Evolve Group.

My thanks go to our members for their work, but also to Jane Lines for her hard work in pulling our entry together.”

Following another break, L&CPU President Garth Tighe presented trophies to representatives of the winning clubs:

Garth Tighe – our newly-elected President, commented, “This weekend’s Annual Club Competition was a ‘fun filled feast of photography’. Three well qualified and respected judges scored the images in front of a live audience. There was great friendly rivalry but equally warm applause from all when an image was awarded a top mark. Each section brought its own anticipation, culminating in the overall winner, Chorley P S. A big thank you to everyone who entered images making it possible to have such an event. Finally, thank you to Bob Robinson and his team for organising this event.”

Bob Robinson, L&CPU Competition Secretary, said, “I would just like to thank all who helped to make the weekend run so smoothly.
The judges for their hard work and dedication.
But most of all I would like to thank the clubs for supporting me and the L&CPU by entering the competition and the audiences on each day for supporting the weekend.

THANK YOU, WE HAD A GREAT WEEKEND OF COMPETITION”
